Exodusters migrate to Kansas and other western states as part of the Exoduster Movement or Exodus of 1879. It was the first general migration of black people following the Civil War.

Exodusters was a name given to African Americans who migrated from states along the Mississippi River to Kansas in the late nineteenth century.

Mercantilism was the principle that wealth of a nation comes from trading with other nations and also comes by imposing government regulations on all of the nation's economic interests.

The main principles of mercantilism:

• the country's wealth is determined by the amount of precious metals in the country,

• Wealth is created in business relations (International Trade)

• The goal is an active trade balance of trade,

• to serve protectionism, government subsidies and the issue of protective tariffs.

The Progressive Movement:

Today, you hear the term ''progressive'' discussed a lot in politics, but progressivism is not a new concept. It was first used to describe policies and interventions of the late 19th to early 20th century, by reformers who felt the need for societal changes.

The first Progressives felt called to action in response to the conditions of poverty, inequality, and corruption that were pervasive during the 19th century.

The development in arts and letters known as the Renaissance(rebirth) was a revived interest in classical learning and culture in the 1300's and the 1400's in Italy, but later spread to other parts of Europe.

The Renaissance involved new thought because it was a secular movement. During the feudal period, the Catholic Church was the center of learning; in fact, the medieval scholar had been concerned with the harnessing of reason in the defense and service of religion. But, with the end of feudalism and increased trading outside of Europe, new ideas emerged and the Renaissance scholar became more concerned with the secular side of things. Furthermore, poets and philosophers concerned themselves with the natural world, rather than theology. One reason for the scholarship in Italy is the fact that Greek scholars emigrated to Italy after the invasion of the Ottoman Turks who captured Constantinople. These scholars brought with them classical texts and manuscripts, which helped to revive interest in classical learning and arts.

Along with the Greek scholars, Italian scholar Petrarch is felt to be a major impetus to the rebirth of culture and learning. Having a passionate interest in the rediscovery of lost Roman manuscripts and a strong belief in the power of ancient thought to civilize, his ideas certainly complemented those who valued classical learning.

The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 was significant because it was the second continental congress that charted a government for territory in Northwest America. It also helped forbid slavery, and made a method of admitting new states near the Union.
