Time and Distance Questions

FACTS  AND  FORMULAE  FOR  TIME  AND  DISTANCE

1.Speed = DistanceTime,  Time=DistanceSpeed, Distance= Speed×Time

2. x km/hr = x×518 m/sec

3. x m/sec = x×185 km/hr

4. If the ratio of the speeds of A and B is a:b , then the ratio of the times taken by them to cover the same distance is or b : a

5. Suppose a man covers a certain distance at x km/ hr and an equal distance at y km/hr . Then, the average speed during the whole journey is 2xyx+ykm/hr.

Q:

A bike runs at the speed of 35 km/h when not serviced and runs at 55 km/h, when serviced. After servicing the bike covers a certain distance in 5 h. How much approximate time will the bike take to cover the same distance when not serviced?

A) 8 hrs B) 7.5 hrs
C) 7 hrs D) 6.5 hrs

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 8 hrs

Explanation:

Given speed of the bike after servicing = 55 kmph

Time taken for travelling some distance at 55 kmph = 5 hrs

Then,

Distance = Speed x Time = 55 x 5 = 275 kms.

Now,

Speed of the bike before servicing = 35 kmph

Distance = 275 kms

Now, Time = Distance/Speed = 275/35 = 7.85 hrs =~ 8 hrs.

Q:

An inspector is 228 meter behind the thief. The inspectorruns 42 meters and the thief runs 30 meters in a minute. Inwhat time will the inspector catch the thief?

A) 19 minutes B) 20 minutes
C) 18 minutes D) 21 minutes

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 19 minutes

Explanation:

Inspector s 228 meter behind the thief and now aftersome x distance he will catch the thief. So
x/30 = 228+x/42 => x = 570 m
(228 + 570) / 42 = 19 min

Q:

Radha and Hema are neighbours and study in the same school. Both of them use bicycles to go to the school. Radha’s speed is 8 km/hr whereas Hema’s speed is 10 km/hr. Hema takes 9 minutes less than Radha to reach the school. How far is the school from the locality of Radha and Hema?

A) 5 km B)  5.5 km
C) 6 km D) 6.5 km

Answer & Explanation Answer: C) 6 km

Explanation:
Let the distance between be D km
Time taken by radha – Time taken by Hema = 9 mins
So D/8 – D/10 = 9/60 hrs
D = 6km

Q:

Three  cars A, B and C  started  from  a  point at 5  pm, 6  pm  and 7  pm respectively and travelled at uniform speeds of 60 km/hr, 80 km/hr and x km/hr respectively in the same direction. If all the three met at another point at the same instant during their journey, then what is the value of x?

A) 120 B) 110
C) 105 D) 100

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 120

Explanation:

Distance covered by A till 6pm = 60 km

Distance covered by A till 7 pm = 120 km

Time taken by B to catch A = 60/(80-60 ) = 3 hrs

So A and B will meet at 6pm + 3 hrs = 9pm

Since we know that all three met at the same time

The time taken by C to cover 120 km

difference will be  = 9pm –7pm = 2hrs

Therefore,(x –60 )*2 = 120x = 120 km/hr

Q:

A plane is going in circles around an airport. The plane takes 3 minutes to complete one round. The angle of elevation of the plane from a point P on the ground at time t seconds is equal to that at time (t + 30) seconds. At time (t + x) seconds, the plane flies vertically above the point P. What is x equal to?

A) 75 seconds B) 90 seconds
C) 105 seconds D) 135 seconds

Answer & Explanation Answer: C) 105 seconds

Explanation:
Let the plane be at point A at t se
conds and at point B
after t + 30 seconds
Since the motion is uniform, we can say that at time t+15 seconds, the plane is above the point is
diametrically opposite to the point P from where the angle is same.
Now since the time taken to cover the full circ
le is 3 minutes (180
seconds), the time taken by the plane
to reach the diametrically opposite point will be 90 seconds.
So the time after which the plane reaches the point P will be = t+ 15 + 90 seconds = (t + 105 )seconds
