Aptitude and Reasoning Questions

Q:

If a positive integer n, divided by 5 has a remainder 2, which of the following must be true?

A) n is odd B) n + 1 cannot be a prime number
C) (n + 2) divided by 7 has remainder 2 D) n + 3 is divisible by 5

Answer & Explanation Answer: D) n + 3 is divisible by 5

Explanation:

You can find the integers which when divided by 5 have a remainder 2 by adding 2 to all multiples of 5. So we have n = 7 , 12, 17, 22 etc.

From this series we can see that n does not have to be odd.

Also n + 1 can be a prime because, for example, 12 + 1 = 13

And (n + 2) / 7 has a remainder 2 in some cases but not all.

Remember the question asks us for what MUST be true, and we see that none of the statements are true in all cases. However, adding 3 to any of the values of n will always give a multiple of 5.

Q:

Four dice are thrown simultaneously. Find the probability that two of them show the same face and remaining two show the different faces.

A) 4/9 B) 5/9
C) 11/18 D) 7/9

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) 5/9

Explanation:

Select a number which ocurs on two dice out of six numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). This can be done in C16, ways.

Now select two distinct number out of remaining 5 numbers which can be done in C25 ways. Thus these 4 numbers can be arranged in 4!/2! ways.

So, the number of ways in which two dice show the same face and the remaining two show different faces is

 C16×C25×4!2!=720

 =>  n(E) = 720

 PE=72064=59

Q:

Study the following graph carefully and answer the questions that follow:

Water level of four major Rivers (in meters) in four different Months

1. what was the respective ratio between the level of River - C in September and the water level of River - B in June?

1. 91 : 101           2. 94 : 101           3. 51 : 103           4. None of these

2. If the danger level of all the four rivers is above 215 m, which river has not crossed the danger level in August but has crossed the danger level in July ?

1. River - A          2. River - B          3. River - C          4. River - D

3. What is the average water level of River - A in all the four months together ?

1. 224.50 m        2. 212.25 m        3. 210.75 m        4. 222.25 m

4. In which river and in which month respectively the water level is highest ?

1. River - C in August     2. River - D in September     3. River - B in July     4. River - D in August

5. If the water level of River - A in July is decreased by 20 percent, then what will be the water level of River - A in July ?

1. 156 m              2. 162 m              3. 164 m            4. 152 m

Answer

1. Answer : 4

Explanation : The water level of River-C in September = 184 and water level of River-B in June = 202

Required ratio = 184 : 202   => 92 : 101

2. Answer :  2

3. Answer : 3

Explanation : Average water level of River-A in all months =196+205+230+2124= 210.75 m

4. Answer :  4

5. Answer : 3

Explanation : Water level of River-A in July after decreasing =205×80100 = 41 x 4 = 164m

The inner circumference of a circular race track, 14m wide is 440m. Find the radius of the outer circle.

A) 84m B) 24m
C) 44m D) 54m

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 84m

Explanation:

let inner radius be r meters.

2πr=440r=440×744=70mradius of outer circle =70+14m

Therefore, Radius of outer circle = 70 + 14 = 84m

Q:

If the price of a commodity is decreased by 20% and its consumption is increased by 10%, what will be the increase or decrease in the expenditure on the commodity?

A) increase 12% B) decrease 12%
C) increase 16% D) decrease 16%

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) decrease 12%

Explanation:

Given the price of a commodity is decreased by  p = 20%

And its consumption is increased by q = 10%

Now, required increase or decrease in the expenditure on the commodity can be

p + q + pq/100 = -20 + 10 - 200/100 = -10 - 2 = -12%.

Hence, decrease in the expenditure = 12%
