CAT Questions

Q:

The greenhouse effect is caused by

A) Deforestation B) Burning of Fossil Fuels
C) Increase in Population D) All of the above

Answer & Explanation Answer: D) All of the above

Explanation:

The major greenhouse gases (GHG’s) solely responsible for greenhouse effect are Carbon dioxide, Ozone, Methane and Water vapor. Although these gases comprise 1% of our atmosphere, they act like a thick warm blanket outside that surrounds this planet and regulate climate control. Greenhouse effect is not bad. In fact, it is needed for all of us to survive on planet Earth. In short, the greenhouse effect is nothing but a naturally occurring process designed by nature that aids in heating earth’s surface and helps to maintain ecological balance.

Now, while some of that heat dissipates into space, some of it burns along the atmosphere, and some of it penetrates the atmosphere and finds its way into the lower atmosphere and the planet’s surface. This in turn raises the average temperature of the Earth. Therefore, the increase in the Earth’s surface temperature due to increase in the number of greenhouse gases leads to global warming.

Causes of Green House Effects ::

* Burning of Fossil Fuels

* Deforestation

* Increase in Population

* Farming

* Industrial Waste and Landfills.

A) 2 B) 4
C) 3 D) 1

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 2

Explanation:

In each row, the second figure is obtained from the first figure by adding two mutually perpendicular line segments at the centre and the third figure is obtained from the first figure by adding four circles outside the main figure.

Q:

Which of the following reactions are redox reactions?

A) Ba(s)+Cl2(g)--->BaCl2(s) B) Mg(s)+Br2(l)--->MgBr2(s)
C) Al(s)+3Ag^+(aq)--->Al^3+(aq)+3Ag(s) D) All of the above

Answer & Explanation Answer: D) All of the above

Explanation:

A redox reaction is a type of reaction which involves transfer of electrons among two species. This reaction is also called oxidation-reduction reaction.

In oxidation process, there is an increase in oxidation state of an atom, ion or molecule by losing the electrons.

In reduction process, there is a decrease in oxidation state of an atom, ion or molecule by accepting the electrons.

1)

In this reaction, Ba undergoes oxidation and Cl undergoes reduction.
This reaction is redox reaction.
In this reaction, oxidation number of Ba increases from 0 to +2 . So, Ba undergoes oxidation. The oxidation number of Cl decreases from 0 to -1. So, Cl undergoes reduction.

2)

From this above reaction, it is clear that Aluminum undergoes oxidation and silver undergoes reduction.
Due to this, this reaction is redox reaction.

In this reaction, oxidation number of Aluminum increases from 0 to +1. So, aluminum undergoes oxidation. The oxidation number of silver decreases from +1 to 0. So, silver undergoes reduction.

3)

In this reaction, Mg undergoes oxidation and Br undergoes reduction.
This reaction is redox reaction.
The reactions 1, 3 and 4 are redox reactions.
In this reaction, oxidation number of Mg increases from 0 to +2 . So, Mg undergoes oxidation. The oxidation number of Br decreases from 0 to -1 . So, Br undergoes reduction.

Hence all the above reactions are redox reactions.

Q:

The main result of aerobic respiration is the

A) production of lactic acid as an end product B) production of ATP from the breakdown of glucose
C) conversion of radiant energy into chemical energy D) storage of energy in a polysaccharide

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) production of ATP from the breakdown of glucose

Explanation:

The three steps within the aerobic respiration process are glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation.

Photosynthesis builds glucose, and what was built in photosynthesis is broken down during aerobic respiration.

Hence, production of ATP from the breakdown of glucose is the main result of aerobic respiration.
