In the given series 1 4 9 16 22 36

1 = 1 x 1 

4 = 2 x 2

9 = 3 x 3

16 = 4 x 4

25 = 5 x 5 (Not 22)

36 = 6 x 6

Hence, the odd man in the series is 22.
