GRE Questions

Q:

Brightness of bulb depends on voltage or current?

A) Current B) Voltage
C) Both A & B D) None

Answer & Explanation Answer: C) Both A & B

Explanation:

Brightness of bulb depends on both voltage and current. The brightness depends on power.

Since we know that  Power (P) = Voltage x Current = V I

So whether you increase the current or the voltage the brightness will increase.

Example Illustration:

 If you connect a long bulb and a round bulb in series, the long bulb glows but the round bulb does not. Both of them have the same current flowing through them (they are in series) but the long bulb has a greater voltage across it because it has more resistance (even though V= IR is not obeyed exactly, voltage drop does depend on the resistance). If you connect a round bulb and a long bulb in parallel, however, it is the round bulb that is brighter because now the voltage across both bulbs is the same but the current is larger through the round bulb (smaller resistance).

Hence, the brightness of a bulb depends on power i.e, both voltage and current.

Q:

Jo's collection contains US, Indian and British stamps. If the ratio of US to Indian stamps is 5 to 2 and the ratio of Indian to British stamps is 5 to 1, what is the ratio of US to British stamps?

A) 10 : 5 B) 15 : 2
C) 20 : 2 D) 25 : 2

Answer & Explanation Answer: D) 25 : 2

Explanation:

Indian stamps are common to both ratios. Multiply both ratios by factors such that the Indian stamps are represented by the same number.

US : Indian = 5 : 2, and Indian : British = 5 : 1. Multiply the first by 5, and the second by 2.

Now US : Indian = 25 : 10, and Indian : British = 10 : 2

Hence the two ratios can be combined and US : British = 25 : 2

Q:

main()

{

fork();

printf(“Hello World!”);

}

Output for the above unix program is

A) Hello World! B) Hello World!Hello World!
C) Hello World D) None

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) Hello World!Hello World!

Explanation:

The fork creates a child that is a duplicate of the parent process. The child begins from the fork().All the statements after the call to fork() will be executed twice.(once by the parent process and other by child). The statement before fork() is executed only by the parent process

Q:

If E = 5 and READ is coded as 7, then what is the code of 'DEAR' ?

A) 6 B) 7
C) 8 D) 9

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) 7

Explanation:

Here E = 5 = 5/1 = 5

=> READ = 18 + 5 + 1 + 4 = 28/4 = 7

=> DEAR = 4 + 5 + 1 + 18 = 28/4 = 7

Q:

In a mixture of milk and water the proportion of water by weight was 75%. If in 60 gm of mixture 15 gm water was added, what would be the percentage of water ? (Weight in gm)

A) 80% B) 70%
C) 75% D) 62%

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 80%

Explanation:

Water in 60 gm mixture=60 x 75/100 = 45 gm. and Milk = 15 gm.

After adding 15 gm. of water in mixture, total water = 45 + 15 = 60 gm and weight of a mixture = 60 + 15 = 75 gm.

So % of water = 100 x 60/75 = 80%.

Q:

The wages of labourers in a factory increases in the ratio 22:25 and there was a reduction in the number of labourers in the ratio 15:11. Find the original wage bill if the present bill is Rs. 5000 ?

A) Rs. 5500 B) Rs. 6000
C) Rs. 6200 D) Rs. 6350

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) Rs. 6000

Explanation:

The wages of labourers in a factory increases in the ratio 22:25 and there was a reduction in the number of labourers in the ratio 15:11. Find the original wage bill if the present bill is Rs 5000 ?
Ratio of increase of wages = 22:25
Ratio of decrease of labourers = 15:11
Compound ratio of wages of labourers = 22 x 15 : 25 x 11 = 330:275
Final bill = Rs. 5000
For 275 ratio wages = Rs. 5000
For 1 ratio wages = 5000/275
For 330 ratio wages = 5000/275 x 330 = Rs. 6000
