Questions

Q:

The Regent (released Voltaire) P (having discovered that he had imprisoned) Q (Ran innocent man and gave him a pension) S

The correct sequence should be

A) P Q R S B) P R S Q
C) Q R S P D) Q R P S

Answer & Explanation Answer: D) Q R P S

Explanation:

Since, the starting statement carries a subject; the next statement will carry a verb i.e. Q follows as it mentioned the discovery of the Regent. R will bethe continuing statement which states what he actually discovered. P follows next as it talked about the reaction of the Regent after the discovery. And S would be the concluding statement and thus form a coherent paragraph.

The correct formation would be, ‘The Regent having discovered that he had imprisoned an innocent man released Voltaire and gave him a pension.’

We set out for the gallows. Two warders marched on either side of the prisoner, with their rifles at the slope; two others marched close against him, gripping him by his arm and shoulder, as though, at once pushing and supporting him. The rest of us, magistrates and the like, followed behind. Suddenly, when we had gone ten yards, the procession stopped short without any order or warning. A dreadful thing had happened a dog, come goodness knows whence, had appeared in the yard. It came bounding among us with a loud volley of barks, and leapt round us wagging its whole body, wild with glee at finding so many human beings together. It was a large woolly dog, half Airedale, half Pariah. For a moment, it pranced round us, and then, before anyone could stop it, it had made a dash for the prisoner, and jumping up tried to lick his face. Everyone stood aghast, too taken aback even to grab at the dog.

What was surprising about the actions of the dog?

A) It ran up and down the path B) It bit the guards
C) It barked at the magistrates D) It licked the prisoner's face

Answer & Explanation Answer: D) It licked the prisoner's face

The Alaska pipeline starts at the frozen edge of the Arctic Ocean. It stretches southward across the largest and northernmost state in the United States, ending at a remote ice-free seaport village nearly 800 miles from where it begins. It is massive in size and extremely complicated to operate. The steel pipe crosses windswept plains and endless miles of delicate tundra that tops the frozen ground. It weaves through crooked canyons, climbs sheer mountains, plunges over rocky crags, makes its way through thick forests, and passes over or under hundreds of rivers and streams. The pipe is 4 feet in diameter, and up to 2 million barrels (or 84 million gallons) of crude oil can be pumped through it daily. Resting on H-shaped steel racks called "bents", long sections of the pipeline follow a zigzag course high above the frozen earth. Other long sections drop out of sight beneath spongy or rocky ground and return to the surface later on. The pattern of the pipeline's up-and-down route is determined by the often harsh demands of the arctic and subarctic climate, the tortuous lay of the land, and the varied compositions of soil, rock, or permafrost (permanently frozen ground). A little more than half of the pipeline is elevated above the ground. The remainder is buried anywhere from 3 to 12 feet, depending largely upon the type of terrain and the properties of the soil. One of the largest in the world, the pipeline cost approximately $8 billion and is by far the biggest and most expensive construction project ever undertaken by private industry. In fact, no single business could raise that much money, so 8 major oil companies formed a consortium in order to share the costs. Each company controlled oil rights to particular shares of land in the oil fields and paid into the pipeline-construction fund according to the size of its holdings. Today, despite enormous problems of climate, supply shortage, equipment breakdowns, labour disagreements, treacherous terrain, a certain amount of mismanagement, and even theft, the Alaska pipeline has been completed and is operating.

What is the capacity of the Alaskan pipeline?

A) 2 million gallons of crude oil B) 4 million barrels of crude oil
C) 84 million gallons of crude oil D) 84 billion barrels of crude oil

Answer & Explanation Answer: C) 84 million gallons of crude oil

Q:

The Great Gatsby is written in which point of view?

A) first person limited B) first person omniscient
C) third person limited D) None of the above

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) first person limited

Explanation:

A first person point of view is said by a character who is invoved in the events of the story and unlike third person point of views will actually use words such as 'we' or 'I'.

The Great Gatsby is told from the point of view of Nick Carroway. He is from the Midwest, but narrates the story after it takes place in the East. As such, he is an outsider, and tends to judge what he experiences in the East based on his midwestern ideas and values.

Nick makes an effort to assure the reader that he is nonjudgmental and completely honest. This is ironic, because he is very judgmental and opinionated.
