Questions

Q:

Order of basicity of amines

Answer

The order of basicity for primary, secondary and tertiary amines are:

Secondary > Primary > Tertiary > NH3

* Amines are basic in nature as they have lone pair of electrons on nitrogen. Therefore, they have a strong tendency to donate this lone pair of electrons to electron acceptors.

* The stability of conjugate acids formed is dependent on the extent of H-bonding,and greater the number of H-atoms on N more stable is the conjugate acid.

* The conjugate acid of primary amine is the most stable with greater number (3) of H-bonds than > Secondary > tertiary. But primary amines are less basic than secondary as the electron density on the N atom is less and lone pair of electrons are not readily available for protonation.

* The two opposing factors i.e. the stability of conjugate acids formed and ease of availability of electrons for Protonation, balance each other in case of secondary amines and it is most basic.

Q:

Which of the following polysaccharides contains a modified monosaccharide?

A) starch B) chitin
C) glycogen D) cellulose

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) chitin

Explanation:

Many carbohydrates contain one or more modified monosaccharide units that have had one or more groups replaced or removed.

Chitin is one of many naturally occurring polymers. It is one of the most abundant natural materials in the world. Over time it is bio-degradable in the natural environment. Its breakdown may be catalyzed by enzymes called chitinases, secreted by microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, and produced by some plants.

Chitin is composed of repeating units of N-acetylglucosamine, a nitrogen-containing form of glucose.

Q:

Which of the following equations represents Photosynthesis?

A) 6CO2 + 6H2O -----> C6H12O6 + 6O2 B) C6H12O6 + 6O2 -----> CO2 + 6H2O
C) CO2 + H2O -----> C6H12O6 + 6O2 D) 6O2 + 6H2O -----> C6H12O6 + 6CO2

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 6CO2 + 6H2O -----> C6H12O6 + 6O2

Explanation:

Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy into chemical energy that can later be released to fuel the organisms activities.

Photosynthesis can be represented using a chemical equation.

The overall balanced equation is

              6CO2 +  6H2O   Sunlight    C6H12O6   +   6O2Source of Carbon & Oxygen  + Source of Electrons & Hydrogen + Energy that drives Photosynthesis             ----> Sugar + Gas produced by splitting water.

Where

CO2 = carbon dioxide

H2O = water

C6H12O6 = glucose

O2 = oxygen.

Q:

The kidneys are stimulated to produce renin

A) when the pH of the urine decreases B) when the specific gravity of urine rises above 1.10
C) when the peritubular capillaries are dilated D) by a decrease in the blood pressure

Answer & Explanation Answer: D) by a decrease in the blood pressure

Explanation:

The kidneys are stimulated to produce renin by a decrease in the blood pressure.

The_kidneys_are_stimulated_to_produce_renin1559028461.jpg image

The renin-angiotensin system or RAS regulates blood pressure and fluid balance in the body. When blood volume or sodium levels in the body are low, or blood potassium is high, cells in the kidney release the enzyme, renin. Renin's primary function is therefore to eventually cause an increase in blood pressure, leading to restoration of perfusion pressure in the kidneys.
