Q:

Amith can row a boat d km upstream and the same distance downstream in 5 hours 15 minutes. Also, he can row the boat 2d km upstream in 7 hours. How long will it take to row the same distance 2d km downstream for Amith ?

A) 4 hrs 10 min B) 3 hrs 15 min
C) 3 hrs 30 min D) 4 hrs 1 min

Answer & Explanation Answer: C) 3 hrs 30 min

Explanation:

Let the speed of boat and stream be x and y kmph respectively.

According to question

d/x+y + d/x-y = 5h 15m or 21/4 hrs ......(i)

and 2d/x-y = 7...... (ii)

From eq. (i) and (ii)

2d/x+y = 7/2

Hence, Amith will take to row 2d km distance downstream in 7/2 hrs

= 3.5 hrs

= 3 hrs 30 min.

Q:

The length of a class room floor exceeds its breadth by 25 m. The area of the floor remains unchanged when the length is decreased by 10 m but the breadth is increased by 8 m. The area of the floor is

A) 5100 sq.m B) 4870 sq.m
C) 4987 sq.m D) 4442 sq.m

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 5100 sq.m

Explanation:

Let the breadth of floor be 'b' m.

Then, length of the floor is 'l = (b + 25)'

Area of the rectangular floor = l x b = (b + 25) × b

According to the question,

(b + 15) (b + 8) = (b + 25) × b

b2 + 8b + 15b + 120 = b2 + 25b

2b = 120

b = 60 m.

l = b + 25 = 60 + 25 = 85 m.

Area of the floor = 85 × 60 = 5100 sq.m.

Q:

The probability of occurance of two two events A and B are 1/4 and 1/2 respectively. The probability of their simultaneous occurrance is 7/50. Find the probability that neither A nor B occurs.

A) 25/99 B) 39/100
C) 61/100 D) 17/100

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) 39/100

Explanation:

P ( neither A nor B) = PA and B

=  PAB=  PAB1-PAB

1-61100=39100

Q:

In a charity show tickets numbered consecutively from 101 through 350 are placed in a box. What is the probability that a ticket selected at random (blindly) will have a number with a hundredth digit of 2?

A) 0.25 B) 0.5
C) 0.75 D) 0.40

Answer & Explanation Answer: D) 0.40

Explanation:

250 numbers between 101 and 350 i.e. n(S)=250

n(E)=100th digits of 2 = 299−199 = 100

P(E)= n(E)/n(S) = 100/250 = 0.40

Q:

The sum of three consecutive odd numbers is 93. What is the middle number?

A) 31 B) 33
C) 29 D) 27

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 31

Explanation:

Let the three consecutive odd numbers be x, x+2, x+4

Then,

x + x + 2 + x + 4 = 93

=> 3x + 6 = 93

=> 3x = 87

=> x = 29 => 29, 31, 33 are three consecutive odd numbers.

Therefore, the middle number is 31.

Q:

A Shepherd had n goats in the year 2000. In 2001 the no.of goats increased by 40% . In 2002 the no. of goats declined to 70%. In 2003 the no. of  goats grew by 30%. In 2004, he sold 10% goats, then he had only 34,398 goats. The percentage increase of the no.of goats in this duration was:

A) 14.66% B) 16.66%
C) 20% D) 33.33%

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 14.66%

Explanation:

There is no need to use the no of goats i.e (34,398). let initially thete be 1000 goats then

  1000 -----> 1400 -----> 980 -----> 1274 ----->1146.6

Thus the % increase = (1146.6-1000)/100 x 100= 14.66%

If 12 men can reap 120 acres of land in 36 days, how many acres of land can 54 men reap in 54 days?

A) 710 acres B) 760 acres
C) 810 acres D) 860 acres

Answer & Explanation Answer: C) 810 acres

Explanation:

12 men120 acres36 days54 men?54 days

 As 12 men can reap 120 acres, 54 men will be able to reap more acres in 36 days, 120 acres of land was reaped, so in 54 days, more land will be reaped.

Thus, the numbers of acres that can be reaped by 54 men in 54 days = 5412x120x5436 = 810 acres
