Q:

A train travelling at 48 kmph crosses another train, having half its length and travelling in opposite direction at 42 kmph, in 12 sec. It also covers a bridge in 45 sec. Find the length of the bridge ?

A) 250 mts B) 400 mts
C) 320 mts D) 390 mts

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) 400 mts

Explanation:

Let the length of the 1st train = L mts

Speed of 1st train = 48 kmph

Now the length of the 2nd train = L/2 mts

Speed of 2nd train = 42 kmph

Let the length of the bridge = D mts

Distance = L + L/2 = 3L/2

Relative speed = 48 + 42 = 90 kmph = 90 x 5/18 = 25 m/s(opposite)

Time = 12 sec

=> 3L/2x25 = 12

=> L = 200 mts

Now it covers the bridge in 45 sec

=> distance = D + 200

Time = 45 sec

Speed = 48 x5/18 = 40/3 m/s

=> D + 200/(40/3) = 45

=> D = 600 - 200 = 400 mts

Hence, the length of the bridge = 400 mts.

Q:

Maneela, Raghu and Aravind have some jems with each of them. Five times the number of jems with Raghu equals seven times the number of jems with Maneela while five times the number of jems with Maneela equals seven times the number of jems with Aravind. What is the minimum number of jems that can be there with all three of them put together ?

A) 108 B) 107
C) 109 D) 110

Answer & Explanation Answer: C) 109

Explanation:

From given data,

R : M = 5 : 7

M : A = 5 : 7

R : M : A = 25 : 35 : 49

25 + 35 + 49 = 109

Q:

A boat can move 5 km/hr in still water. If the river is running at 1 km/hr, it takes it 75 min to move to a place and back. How far is the place?

A) 3 kms B) 5 kms
C) 6 kms D) 4 kms

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 3 kms

Explanation:

Let the place be at a distance of 'd' kms

From the given data,

d5 - 1 + d5 + 1 = 7560 kmsd4 + d6 = 54

5d/12 = 5/4 => d = 3 kms.

Hence, the place is 3 kms far.

Q:

Akhil after travelling 50 km meets Raju who suggests him to go slower. He then proceeds at ¾ of his former speed and arrives at his destination 35 minutes late. Had the meeting occurred 24 km further Akhil would have reached its destination 25 minutes late. What is the initial speed of Akhil?

A) 48 kmph B) 36 kmph
C) 24 kmph D) 20 kmph

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) 48 kmph

Explanation:

Let the initial speed of Akhil be '4p' kmph

Then speed after decrease in speed = '3p' kmph

We know that,

Change in speed == Change in time

According to the given data,

243p - 244p = 35 - 2560=> p = 12

Hence, the initial speed of Akhil = 4p = 4 x 12 = 48 kmph.

Q:

The ratio of the speed of a boat downstream and speed of the stream is 9:1. If the speed of the current is 3 km per hr, find the distance travelled by the boat upstream in 5 hours.

A) 100 km B) 98 km
C) 109 km D) 105 km

Answer & Explanation Answer: D) 105 km

Explanation:

Let the speed of boat in still water is ‘x’ km/hr & that of stream is ‘y’ km/hr.
Then, ATQ
(x+y)/y = 9/1 9y = x + y
x = 8y
y = 3 km/hr
So, x = 24 km/hr
Upstream speed = 24-3 = 21 km/hr
Hence, distance travelled upstream in 5 hours = 21*5 = 105 km.

Q:

In what ratio must a merchant mix two varieties of oils worth Rs. 60/kg and Rs. 65/kg, so that by selling the mixture at Rs. 68.20/kg, he may gain 10% ?

A) 2:3 B) 4:3
C) 3:4 D) 3:2

Answer & Explanation Answer: D) 3:2

Explanation:

Let he mixes the oils in the ratio = x : y

Then, the cost price of the oils = 60x + 65y

Given selling price = Rs. 68.20

=> Selling price = 68.20(x+y)

Given profit = 10% = SP - CP

=> 10/100 (60x + 65y) = 68.20(x+y)-(60x + 65y)

=> 6x + 6.5y = 8.20x + 3.20y

=>2.2x = 3.3y

=> x : y = 3 : 2
