Here the given series 28, 12, 4, 2, -2 follows a pattern that

$$\begin{gathered} 28 \\ 28 - 24 = 28 - 16 = 12 \\ 12 - 23 = 12 - 8 = 4 \\ 4 - 22 = 4 - 4 = 0 (NOT 2) \\ 0 - 21 = 0 - 2 = -2 \end{gathered}$$

Hence, the odd man in the given series is 2.

This is a quadratic equation. To find n we multiply the last terms in each bracket together (2 times -5) = -10

To find ‘a’ we multiply the first terms in each bracket together (3x times 2x) = 6x2, So a = 6.

Thus a - n = 16

To find k we multiply the first term in the first bracket by the second term in the second bracket and add the result to the product of the second term in the first bracket and the first term in the second. (-15x + 4x) = -11x. So k = -11

16 - 11 = 5

15th August, 2010 = (2009 years + Period 1.1.2010 to 15.8.2010)

Odd days in 1600 years = 0

Odd days in 400 years = 0

Let the numbers be x, x + 2, x + 4, x + 6 and x + 8.

Then  [x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) + (x + 6) + (x + 8) ] / 5 = 61.

or 5x + 20 = 305 or x = 57.

So, required difference = (57 + 8) - 57  = 8

9 x 10 = 90

8 x 9 = 72

7 x 8 = 56

6 x 7 = 42

5 x 6 = 30 (not 36)
