China flicked the switch on the world’s largest floating solar energy plant.  The massive waterborne plant is expected to generate 40 megawatts at one time and could supply electricity for over 15,000 homes. The pioneering project, located in eastern China, is thought to cement China’s status as a top producer of solar energy in the world.  The plant has been built in Huainan city, Anhui Province, by Sungrow Power Supply, a Chinese company specialised in renewable energy.

The central government has said that India has emerged as the 3rd largest aviation market in the world with a passenger traffic of over 10 crore reported for 2016-17. This was stated by minister of state for civil aviation Jayant Sinha at a media event on the achievements of the ministry of civil aviation on the completion of three years of the NDA government.

The construction of the world’s largest optical telescope has started in northern Chile, which is expected to begin operating in 2024. The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is being built by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and will have a main mirror that is 39m in diameter. The telescope will be positioned on top of Cerro Armazones – a 3046-metre long mountain Chile. It will tackle a wide range of scientific challenges, including probing Earth-like exoplanets for signs of life, studying the nature of dark energy and dark matter, and observing the universe’s early stages to explore humans’ origins.

An Indian boy has won the world’s largest pre-college science competition in the US in the environmental engineering category for his project on biodegradation of pesticides. Prashant Ranganathan, a 12th grader from Jamshedpur, alongwith over 20 high school students from various parts of India, participated in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

The 112-feet tall bust of ‘Adiyogi’ Lord Shiva at the Isha Yoga Foundation has been declared the world’s largest bust by the Guinness Book of World Records. The Guinness had announced this on its website. The bust at the Isha Yoga Foundation on the outskirts of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 24 February.

1. India's military expenditure grew around 8.5 percent in 2016, making it the world's fifth largest spender at $55.9 billion, figures released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

2. As per the figures, the US remains the world's largest military spender registering a growth of 1.7 percent between 2015 and 2016 to $611 billion.

India's largest e-commerce player Flipkart buys eBay's India business, and closing a $1.4 billion fund-raising round from Tencent, eBay and Microsoft. Mr. Kalyan Krishnamurthy is the CEO of Flipkart.
