Aptitude and Reasoning Questions

Q:

5% of a number is 25% more than another number. The difference between the numbers is 96. Then find the value of the numbers?

A) 102 & 6 B) 99 & 3
C) 104 & 8 D) 100 & 4

Answer & Explanation Answer: D) 100 & 4

Explanation:

Let the first number be x and the second number be y.

Given

5% of x = (25% of y) + y

=> 5x/100 = 5y/4

=> x = 25y ......(1)

and also given that, x - y = 96

=> x = 96 + y .....(2)

From (1)&(2)

25y = 96 + y

=> 24y = 96

=> y = 4

From (1)

x = 96 + 4 = 100

Hence, the numbers are 100 & 4.

Q:

Amithab's average expenditure for the January to June is Rs. 4200 and he spends Rs.1200 in January and Rs.1500 in july.The average expenditure for the months of febraury to July is:

A) Rs. 4250 B) Rs. 4520
C) Rs. 4060 D) None of these

Answer & Explanation Answer: A) Rs. 4250

Explanation:

Amithab's total expenditure for Jan - June  = 4200 x 6 = 25200

Expenditure for Feb - June = 25200-1200 = 24000

Expenditure for the months of Feb - July = 24000 + 1500 =25500

The average expenditure = 25500/6 = 4250

Q:

A room is 6 meters 24 centimeters in length and 4 meters 32 centimeters in Width. Find the least number of square tiles of equal size required to cover the entire floor of the room.

A) 107 B) 117
C) 127 D) 137

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) 117

Explanation:

Let us calculate both the length and width of the room in centimeters.

Length = 6 meters and 24 centimeters = 624 cm

width = 4 meters and 32 centimeters = 432 cm

As we want the least number of square tiles required, it means the length of each square tile should be as large as possible.Further,the length of each square tile should be a factor of both the length and width of the room.

Hence, the length of each square tile will be equal to the HCF of the length and width of the room = HCF of 624 and 432 = 48

Thus, the number of square tiles required = (624 x 432 ) / (48 x 48) = 13 x 9 = 117

A. 50000                   B. 42000                   C. 33000                   D. 21000

2. What is the difference between the total productions of the two Companies in the given years ?

A. 19000                   B. 22000                   C. 26000                   D. 28000

3. What is the average numbers of vehicles manufactured by Company X over the given period ? (rounded off to nearest integer)

A. 119333                 B. 113666                 C. 112778                 D. 111223

4. In which of the following years, the difference between the productions of Companies X and Y was the maximum among the given years ?

A. 1997                     B. 1998                     C. 1999                     D. 2000

5. The production of Company Y in 2000 was approximately what percent of the production of Company X in the same year ?

A. 173                       B. 164                       C. 132                       D. 97

Answer

1. ANSWERS  : D

Explanation-   Required difference = (128000 - 107000) = 21000.

2. ANSWERS  : C

Explanation-  From the line-graph it is clear that the productions of Company X in the   years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 are 119000, 99000, 141000, 78000, 120000 and 159000 and those of Company Y are 139000, 120000,100000, 128000, 107000 and 148000 respectively.

Total production of Company X from 1997 to 2002

= 119000 + 99000 + 141000 + 78000 + 120000 + 159000

= 716000.

and total production of Company Y from 1997 to 2002

= 139000 + 120000 + 100000 + 128000 + 107000 + 148000

= 742000.

Difference = (742000 - 716000) = 26000.

3. ANSWERS  : A

Explanation-  Average number of vehicles manufactured by Company X

16×119000+99000+141000+78000+120000+159000

 = 119333.

4. ANSWERS  : D

Explanation-   The difference between the productions of Companies X and Y in various years are:

 For 1997 (139000 - 119000)  = 20000.

 For 1998 (120000 - 99000)  = 21000.

 For 1999 (141000 - 100000)  = 41000.

 For 2000 (128000 - 78000) = 50000.

 For 2001 (120000 - 107000) = 13000.

 For 2002 (159000 - 148000) = 11000.

 Clearly, maximum difference was in 2000.

5. ANSWERS  :  B

Explanation  - Required percentage= 12800078000×100 % = 164%

Q:

If the price of a commodity is decreased by 20% and its consumption is increased by 10%, what will be the increase or decrease in the expenditure on the commodity?

A) increase 12% B) decrease 12%
C) increase 16% D) decrease 16%

Answer & Explanation Answer: B) decrease 12%

Explanation:

Given the price of a commodity is decreased by  p = 20%

And its consumption is increased by q = 10%

Now, required increase or decrease in the expenditure on the commodity can be

p + q + pq/100 = -20 + 10 - 200/100 = -10 - 2 = -12%.

Hence, decrease in the expenditure = 12%
